Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay

I've been watching an incredible series on Showtime named "Dexter." I recently learned the show is based on a book entitled Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay.

Dexter is a blood spatter analyst working for the Miami PD who is also a serial killer. Taught by his father, a homocide detective, how to live in the world even though he is a sociopath, Dexter has come to have friends, a girlfriend, a soft spot for kids, a good job, and kills only those people he knows to have gotten away with murder.

The show is funny at times, tongue-in-cheek, of course serious, and sad. The title character is magnificently played by Michael C. Hall of Six Feet Under fame. He's sexy, sweaty, immensely likeable, and then every so often he looks at the camera with just the inkling of a smile and you know he's got a plan for a very bad character.

Read a review of the series here.

You can read the first chapter of the book here.

You can order the book and its sequel Dearly Devoted Dexter from Barnes & Noble.
